We aimed to investigate the frequency of urinary system tuberculosis in cases with pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis. The study included 150 pulmonary tuberculosis and 50 extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases 39 females and 161 males, mean age: 39,2 (16-69) followed in our center between January 1994 and March 1995. Prior to treatment, morning urine samples were obtained three times in 189 cases and twice in 11 cases. Obtained urine samples were directly examined with respect to acid resistant bacillus (ARB) and cultured. Direct examination of urine samples in all of the 200 cases were found to be negative for ARB. Urine cultures were positive in 5 (3.3 %) of the pulmonary tuberculosis cases and in 5 (10%) of the extra pulmonary tuberculosis cases (p>0.05). Pulmonary tuberculosis cases were 3 far advanced and 2 moderately advanced. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases included 2 tuberculosis lymphadenitis, 1 tuberculosis peritonitis, 1 tüberculosis meningitis, and 1 cutaneous tuberculosis. Of ten cases with urinary system tuberculosis, 7 cases were asymptomatic. Intravenous pyelography could been performed in 6 cases and evaluated as consistent with tuberculosis in 5 cases. Our results show that asymptomatic urinary tuberculosis cases can be detected in tuberculosis patient population and the frequency of patient with urinary system tuberculosis was higher in patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis and advanced pulmonary tuberculosis. Bu çalışmada pulmoner ve ekstrapulmoner tüberkülozlu olgularda üriner sistem tüberkülozu sıklığını araştırmayı amaçladık. Haziran 1994-Mart 1995 tarihleri arasında merkezimizde takip edilen 150 pulmoner tüberküloz, 50 ekstrapulmoner tüberküloz olgusu çalışmaya alındı. Olguların 39'u kadın, 161'i erkek olup yaş ortalaması 39.2 (16-69) idi. 189 olgudan 3, 11 olgudan 2 sabah idrarı örneği alındı. Elde edilen idrar örnekleri asido rezistans basil açısından direkt olarak incelendi ve kültüre ekildi. İdrar örneklerinin tümü direkt incelemede asidorezistans basil açısından negatif bulundu. Pulmoner tüberkülozlu olguların 5'inde (% 3.3) ve ekstrapulmoner tüberkülozlu olguların 6'sında (% 10) idrar kültürleri tüberküloz basili açısından pozitif idi (p> 0.05). Üriner sistem tüberkülozuna sahip 5 pulmoner tüberkülozlu olgunun 3'ü ileri, 2' si orta derecede ilerlemiş akciğer tüberkülozuna sahip olup, idrar kültürünün pozitif olduğu ekstrapulmoner tüberkülozlu olguların 2'si tüberküloz lenfadenit, 1'i tüberküloz peritonit, 1'i tüberküloz menenjit ve 1'i de cilt tüberkülozu olgusu idi. Üriner sistem tüberkülozu saptanan 10 olgunun 7'si (%70) asemptomatik olup, intravenöz piyelografinin (IVP) yapıldığı 6 olgunun 5'inde IVP bulguları tüberküloz lehine olarak değerlendirildi. Çalışmamızın sonuçları tüberkülozlu hasta populasyonunda asemptomatik üriner sistem tüberkülozu olgularının saptanabileceğini, üriner sistem tüberkülozlu olgu sıklığının ekstrapulmoner tüberkülozlu ve ilerlemiş akciğer tüberkülozlu hasta populasyonunda daha yüksek olduğunu düşündürmektedir.
